The opening of a sinkhole in Florida led to the partial collapse of two buildings at a resort near Disney World late Sunday evening. No one was injured.

The 60-foot-wide Florida sinkhole occurred below Summer Bay Resort, a villa in Clermont, Fla., about 10 minutes away from Disney World. The villa's guests "heard the building popping, and they all got out," said one security worker at Summer Bay Resort.

Maggie Ghamry, a witness to the sinkhole destruction, described the strange scene.

"There were windows breaking everywhere," Ghamry said. "One woman was sitting in the tub and the tub levitated and that's when she just grabbed a pair of shorts and came out with nothing. So, it was the most sure real [sic] experience I never could have imagined in my wildest dreams."

Residents were evacuated from the Disney World-area villa sometime after 10:30 PM Sunday night, when a window blew out in one of the buildings. A second window blew out around 11:00 PM and the buildings began shaking. Around 11:30 PM, Luis Perez of Berona, N.J., was still in his room when the lights went out; he headed for the villa front desk, at which point he saw emergency workers outside.

"I started walking toward where they were at and you could see the building leaning and you could see a big crack at the base of the building," said Perez.

A total of 36 guests were evacuated from the collapsed buildings. They have been moved to other rooms on the Summer Bay Resort grounds.

The president of Summer Bay Resort said that when the resort was built 15 years ago, it performed the necessary geological testing to ensure that the ground was safe to build on. Sinkholes are a particular concern in Florida, as the state sits on limestone, a substance which can dissolve from groundwater and cause the ground above to collapse.
