Dead stingrays have washed ashore in Veracruz, Mexico, on Tuesday. Locals made the shocking discovery and estimate as many as 300 stingray carcasses litted the beach.

The cause of the bizarre scene remains a mystery as Mexican authorities are conducting investigations.

According to a few local witnesses, Chachalacas fishermen had caught the stingrays, but ultimately dumped them when the fish could not be sold for a good price. Food vender Adriana Loreda was one of the witnesses that claimed she saw fishermen dumping the stingrays off the beach.

Chachalacas fisherman Jaime Vazquez defended his trade and claimed that fishermen would never dump the stingrays, insisting that he never heard of fish discarded on the beach for the 30 years he's been in the profession. Vazquez claimed any unwanted catch would have been set free.

While the fisherman theory seems possible, some wonder just how fishing nets could have possibly caught 250 stingrays. Instead, one environmental group wonders whether abnormal seismic activity in the ocean caused the stingrays to die.

A Mexican delicacy, chopped stingray wings are served as snacks in Veracruz restaurants. According to the National Geographic, stingrays are considered threatened animals.

Veracruz Environment Minister Victor Alvarado Martinez extended requests to federal authorities for assistance in the troubling investigation.
